Self-Care Excerpt from Don't Weight

Not Easy

As you read about this self-care focus and healthy living, it may sound too simple. I don't mean to imply that there are no struggles involved in this process. The road to self-acceptance and self-care includes plenty of struggles. It is not easy. It takes time and effort. It is downright difficult at times.

However, this is a road worth traveling because you CAN succeed at these goals. Most of the difficulties arise when you veer away from self-acceptance and accidentally slide into self-critical attitudes or behavior. Other troubles arise when you tune out and shut down your awareness leading to self-abusive behavior. In both of these cases, it becomes difficult to take care of yourself. The challenge is to tune in and take care.

The good news is that when you feel pain or start to do hurtful things, you can think of these as RED FLAGS! Once you see a red flag, then you can steer yourself back toward more constructive attitudes and behaviors. More good news is that when you recognize the red flags and take action, you will feel better physically and emotionally. You cannot fail. As soon as you realize that you are participating in self-criticism or destructive behavior, that is when you have the opportunity to change and move back toward self-acceptance and self-care.

Think of someone riding a bike. They do not steer straight center with their arms locked. Instead they veer a little to the right and a little to the left. This swerving right and left a tiny bit IS how a person steers straight toward the center on a bicycle. Your journey will be much the same. Sometimes you will veer off toward self-criticism. Sometimes you will veer off toward tuning out. That's OK. That is part of the process.

What will make your struggle worth the effort? Because at any given moment, once you get used to seeing the red flags and solving the problems, it FEELS better to take care of yourself! What will motivate you to continue is ENJOYMENT and PLEASURE.
