Plus-Size Fitness Excerpt from Don't Weight

When it Comes to Fitness, What Do I Want to Give Myself?

This is not a selfish question. This question helps you take better care of yourself. When you feel better and have more energy, you can be more effective in your life, your family, and your community. Ask: "What do I want to give myself today that will help me feel my best?" With so much to do, it is tough to find time to take care of yourself. Sometimes it even seems selfish to spend any time on yourself when so many others need your attention. You will be able to do more for your friends and family when you meet your basic needs first. The truth is, if you take care of yourself, you will get more done in the long run.

One of your body's basic needs is for regular movement. Whatever you do in your busy life, you and your body will be doing it together. It is so tempting to say, "I'll wait until after things calm down to get back to my fitness". Don't wait. It costs too much. Life is complicated. You may end up waiting for months before things calm down. You deserve to feel your best. You should be able to enjoy higher energy. You need the stress relief that comes from regular movement and exercise!

Think about how you feel as you face a busy day or hectic time in your life. What do you want to give yourself today? You might want to feel better or have more energy so that you can do the jobs ahead of you. If you need more energy, do something active. Get your circulation going. You will feel better. The weather may prevent you from going outside. Do something inside. Put on your favorite music and dance. (You can boogie in a chair if you need to.) If you have in-laws visiting and you don't want to dance around your house, dance around your bedroom using headphones.

If you usually use weights for muscle toning, you may not have any available when you travel. Pick up a book, a bottle of shampoo, a small bag, and try some muscle toning moves with these substitute weights. If you can't get to the gym, pretend your bed is your exercise mat. Almost anything you can do on an exercise mat, you can do on your bed. Many of my clients prefer this soft flat surface to the floor anyway.

When you get to the mall, don't shop right away. Before you load your arms with packages, you can enjoy some mall walking. (I have several clients who use a wheel chair and who enjoy mall wheeling.) Start out with five minutes of slower walking in good posture for a warm-up. Next, walk fast enough to breathe a little heavier and you are doing an aerobic workout. It does not matter whether your aerobic walking lasts one minute or one hour. It matters that you listen to your body and end up feeling invigorated, not tired. Finish up with another five minutes of mellow walking for a cool-down. Then, you are ready to start your shopping clear-headed and energized.

People with any ability or disability can still work out and improve fitness.

Movement brightens your mood. Your cheeks will be pink and you will be warmer. Your joints will be less stiff. Your back will be stronger and less likely to ache. Don't put off movement until after your other tasks are done. Move first and you will have more energy to do the rest of the tasks in your day.
