Plus-Size Fitness Excerpt from Don't Weight

Swimming and Water Exercise

For many people swimming is an ideal no-impact aerobic workout. For others, it is a way to tone muscles and move joints through a more full range of motion than they would be able to on land. If you have mobility problems or if you cope with chronic pain, consider swimming and water exercise as an option.

Using a pool often means that you pack your suit in your bag, change in the dressing room, and enjoy the water. Afterwards there are showers to get the chlorine off your hair and skin. You may want to use a shampoo designed for getting the chlorine out. You may want to use a skin moisturizer to keep your skin in good condition. For many people, that is all they need to do to enjoy water exercise.

However, there are often more obstacles to swimming than you might realize. On several occasions I have worked with clients who had memberships to use a pool, and for some reason, they just did not go. Often the client will even start out the conversation by saying, "This is so stupid. I paid for the membership. It is ridiculous that I just don't go to the pool. There is no reason for me not to go except laziness." Can you hear how this person has called themselves names? Can you see how this kind of thinking actually prevents the person from implementing problem-solving in order to find out what is really going on here? There is always a reason for the things that people do and don't do.
