Plus-Size Fitness Excerpt from Don't Weight

Choose the Right Type of Water Fitness for You

If you tend to be a solitary person, you may enjoy swimming laps or water walking on your own. These activities leave your mind free to think or to remain blank, whichever feels better for you. If you tend to prefer social settings, you may enjoy water walking with a friend. This is an opportunity to exercise and to talk at the same time. I know several people who have made friends for life in just this way. The key is to tune in to yourself and notice which you prefer, notice what you need. Your preferences and needs may change from day to day or season to season. Pay attention to how you feel. Continue to select a fitness setting that gives you the stimulation or the peace and quiet that you prefer. You increase your chances of continuing your fitness plan by selecting the setting that works for you.

There are many different types of water fitness classes. Find out what is available. You are entitled to try various types of workout and find what you enjoy most. Notice the instructor. Do you feel comfortable with the atmosphere he/she instills in the class? Do you like the music? Pay attention to the speed of movements. Often you can make the movements more comfortable by doing them halftime. Do what feels good to you. If you can find an instructor that shows you how to adapt the move for different needs, that is even better.

Swimming and water exercises can be an important option in your overall fitness choices. Set yourself up for success by paying attention to how you feel and what you need. Important considerations are:

  • Do you have the right clothing and gear to feel comfortable?
  • Do the pool and the locker room meet your needs? Do they fit you?
  • Do you prefer solitary or social workout situations?
  • Do you feel comfortable with the instructor, music, and pace?

If you can answer these questions and make effective choices for yourself, you will have the best chance to enjoy and continue your water workouts.
