Plus-Size Fitness Excerpt from Don't Weight

Using Fitness Videos or DVDs

This can be a way to workout at your own home and on your own schedule. One challenge is to select a fitness video that will not encourage body loathing. Most fitness videos or DVDs on the market today include negative comments about large bodies and criticism of body shape or texture. I recommend you select a video that focuses on WELLNESS NOT WEIGHT LOSS. Avoid body criticism, which can encourage body loathing and decrease your self-esteem. These negative emotions can reduce your motivation toward self-care and self-acceptance. Body criticism can be found in most fitness videos on the market today. Luckily for us, there are more and more self-accepting fitness videos available. If you buy them, then the business owners will be encouraged to make more. If you use these self-accepting fitness videos, then you will be taking good care of yourself in body and spirit.

How can you tell if a fitness video has body criticism in it? Do all the people pictured on the cover look like models? That should be a warning sign. Does the text on the video cover guarantee weight loss, promise body sculpting or shaping, or focus on how this workout will improve your physical appearance? If you see these statements that focus on looks or weight instead of health and wellness, the video will probably include body critical comments that could thwart your self-care and self-acceptance.

As you seek fitness videos that will provide long term motivation, look for plus-size instructors or participants on the cover. If they are depicted as active vibrant people, that is a good sign. Instead of body critical videos, I recommend you choose one of the many size-friendly fitness videos on the market now (there are more on the way every year.) You can find a great list of dozens of videos on You can also call 1-877-KellyBliss or check out my website where I have TEN plus-size fitness videos available now with more on the way. Choose a workout that celebrates what your body can DO and how you feel instead of how you look.

Keep looking for a workout that helps you feel better about your body, increases your physical abilities, and helps you function better. These are constructive goals that will encourage self-care in the long run.

Whether you work out sitting, standing, or reclining, choose the right intensity fitness video for your needs.
